Key Ingredients and their Benefits for Acne Prone/Oily Skin:

SALICYLIC ACID is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA) and acts as a keratolytic. It exfoliates by removing dead skin cell build-up and reduces excess sebum that blocks the pores. It has anti-inflammatory benefits.

MANDELIC ACID is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that is derived from the bitter almond. It is regarded as a less aggressive AHA compared to other AHA’s. It removes dead skin cell buildup and gently, exfoliates the skin. Studies have shown that it has anti-bacterial effects and inhibits bacteria contributing to acne, significantly reducing acne. It also inhibits the enzyme, tyrosinase and therefore, lightens dark spots and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation(PIH). It inhibits the enzyme elastase, responsible for breakdown of elastin and collagen, improving elasticity and skin firmness. It minimizes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and is a great anti-ageing ingredient.

NIACINAMIDE (VITAMIN B3) has been shown to have anti-inflammatory benefits, lighten dark marks, age spots, even out skin tone by inhibiting the transfer of the melanin pigment from the melanocyte to the surrounding keratinocyte skin cells. Studies have also shown that this ingredient inhibits elastase activity(the enzyme responsible for elastin and collagen breakdown) and therefore, improves the elasticity and tone of the skin, minimizing the appearance of sagging, fine lines and wrinkles. It also improves hydration levels of the skin by reducing TEWL (trans-epidermal water loss).

RETINYL PALMITATE (FORM OF VITAMIN A) reduces excess sebum, improves elasticity and skin tone. It also minimizes scarring from acne.

GREEN TEA EXTRACT is a botanical which contains polyphenols with both fat soluble and water soluble antioxidants. It is ideal to have both forms of antioxidants in the cellular lipid membrane and its hydrophilic core in order to fight free radicals. In this regard it has superior benefits to the use of Vitamin C compounds in skincare as an antioxidant. Through its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, this ingredient lightens dark marks and has anti-ageing benefits. It also has anti-bacterial effects. Epigallocatechin gallate(EGCG) is a well known catechin. Catechins make up most of the polyphenols in this ingredient and has sun protective benefits.

LINOLEIC and LINOLENIC ACID (VITAMIN F FORTE) are essential fatty acids that improve  moisture and function of the skin barrier. This ingredient improves absorption of other active ingredients. It also helps to regulate sebum and unclogs the skin. It has soothing, anti-inflammatory benefits and contributes to brightening and anti-ageing effects on the skin. It has anti-oxidant benefits and plays a role in lightening hyperpigmentation.

UREA is classified as a keratolytic which means it removes dead skin cells. It improves moisture retention  and therefore, alleviates dry, flaky skin. It also softens the skin.

TEA TREE OIL is commonly used for acne related skincare. It has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.

ALLANTOIN increases the capacity of corneocytes to retain moisture by means of it’s keratolytic effects and therefore, re-enforces the skin’s natural protective barrier.
